Prepping and Planting

To say I am in a panicked rush for this season would be an understatement. I had exactly 1 week to prep the garden beds, start the seedlings in their soil blocks, direct sow the root vegetables, file all the business forms, and apply for farmers markets for the spring and summer. I also gave my final notice to my full time job. I can’t explain the feeling cocktail of sadness, excitement, and fear that washed through me as I gave my notice. I have absolutely loved being a truck driver and getting to see the country. I have never felt more apart of a working family as I did with my Z-Line family. I also have never left a stable job for the complete and utter unknown of starting a new business from scratch. To say a wave of panic runs through me anytime I think about the future now sounds cliche but isn’t any less true. Yes I am worried about paying bills and becoming stir crazy from being home all the time but I have to remind myself that I also get to spend more time with my mom and my dogs. I will be able to go for walks, bike rides, and have a home cooked meal of healthy food every night. As much as I loved trucking, it has slowly been killing me, literally. My weight has exploded, my blood pressure is at an all time high, my sugar levels are in range for diabetes, and I’ve been struggling with blood clots. If I continued along that path, I would undoubtedly have a stroke, heart attack, or pulmonary embolism out on the road while driving an 80,000lb vehicle at 70mph. Not good for anyone.

All this is to say I am fully committed to Backroads Nation Homestead and I plan to give it 100% of my time, dedication, and attention. Will I have to get a part-time job? Maybe. Will I be free to exercise, eat healthier, and become healthier? Absolutely. I want to thank you all for giving me your support and encouragement going forward.

As a bonus, we are officially attending the Shallotte Farmer’s Market, the Ocean Isle Beach Farmer’s Market, and the Silver Coast Winery Summer Market! Look for the dates to go up on our events page.
